The invitation says 'festive attire' and now you are googling. Here is every dress code translated into what you can actually wear, from strictest to loosest.

## Black tie

Tuxedo for men (dark dinner jacket, formal shirt, bow tie). For women, floor-length is traditional but a truly formal midi now passes everywhere except the strictest families. Dark, rich colors; this is not the moment for prints or pastels.

## Black tie optional / formal

The most misread code. It means: tuxedo welcome, dark suit completely fine. Women: long or cocktail-length, elevated fabric (silk, satin, crepe). The 'optional' applies to the tux, not to the effort.

## Cocktail

The modern default. Men: suit and tie, any color family, loafers acceptable. Women: knee-to-midi dress, dressy jumpsuit, or separates with a silk top. Heels or dressy flats both fine.

## Semi-formal

Cocktail's daytime sibling and nearly interchangeable. Slightly lighter colors and fabrics for daytime; darker for evening. Men can drop the tie if the wedding is daytime - keep it for evening.

## Dressy casual / smart casual

The backyard-barn register. Men: pressed chinos or dress trousers, button-down, blazer optional, clean loafers or leather sneakers. Women: a nice sundress, midi skirt and top, or tailored jumpsuit. No denim, no flip-flops, whatever the venue.

## 'Festive', 'garden', 'creative black tie'

These mean: the base code (usually cocktail) plus permission for color and personality. Festive = cocktail with bolder color. Garden = cocktail adapted for grass (block heels, not stilettos). Creative black tie = tuxedo with one playful element.

## The two rules that override every code

No white, ivory, or anything that photographs as bridal - including pale champagne at a traditional wedding. And when torn between two options, dress one notch up: nobody was ever embarrassed at a wedding for looking too good.
