What to wear to a daytime garden wedding in October
An October garden wedding is two events in one: a sunny afternoon that feels like late summer and a shaded evening that feels like November. Add grass underfoot and you have the most gear-dependent dress code of the season. Here is the formula.
Start with the ground
Stilettos sink. Block heels, wedges, or dressy flats are the correct call on grass, and no one has ever looked underdressed because their heels were an inch wider. If the invite mentions a lawn or garden path, leave the thin heels home entirely.
The dress math
Midi length in a mid-weight fabric: crepe, heavier satin, or a substantial knit. It reads formal enough for the ceremony, handles a breeze, and does not need a slip. Autumn tones (forest, burgundy, rust, deep navy) sit better in October light than summer pastels, and darker florals split the difference.
The layer is not optional
By the toasts, garden temperatures drop fast and the venue rarely heats the lawn. A tailored wrap, cropped jacket, or dressy coat you are happy to be photographed in should be part of the outfit from the start, not an afterthought grabbed on the way out. Pashmina works; a fleece does not.
What to skip
White and anything close to it, obviously, but also floor-length hems (wet grass), delicate suede (dew), and a bare-leg plan with no backup. Sheer tights weigh nothing in a clutch and save the evening when the temperature falls off a cliff.
